A Message from Ahna
Every class I have taken has been valuable, either for techniques, or for more understanding about how the body works; physically, mentally, emotionally, and psychologically.
Most of us have collected extra tension through the course of our lives, from accidents, injuries, surgeries, long term stress, from our repetitive activities, or attitudes we've acquired along the way. These injuries and tensions form a pattern in our bodies. Exercise, and our mother's nagging to 'Stand up straight!' may help, but most of this patterning happens below our conscious awareness and becomes part of "who we are". These patterns become written into our muscular tensions, or skeletal form, and into the tissues that go between: the connective tissues.
I specialize in CranioSacral Therapy and body restructuring, both focusing on different aspects of that connective tissue (fascia), relieving stress patterns and trauma, and reducing the tension in the nervous system, to allow your body to function better.
When you come in, I will quickly assess what is going on with your body, and during the massage, will use whichever therapeutic “tool” from my massage “kit” will be most beneficial.
Definition: Massage therapy is a systematic manual application of pressure and movement to the soft tissue of the body - the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (the membrane surrounding muscles and muscle groups). It is felt to encourage healing by promoting the flow of blood and lymph, relieving tension, stimulating nerves, and stretching and loosening muscles and connective tissue to keep them elastic.
In the 5th century BCE, the Greek physician Hippocrates wrote that his colleagues should be experienced "in rubbing ... for rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose, and loosen a joint that is too rigid." Various forms of massage were also employed by the ancient Chinese, Egyptians, and Romans. However, the technique as we know it today didn't appear until the late 19th century when Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish gymnast, formulated the principles of Swedish massage.
Dozens of specialized massage techniques are in use today for the treatment of anxiety, tension, depression, insomnia, and stress, as well as back pain, headache, muscle pain, and some forms of chronic pain. Massage is also frequently used for the treatment of minor sports injuries and repetitive stress injuries, and for the enhancement of physical conditioning.
Massage Therapy Radio talks with Janice VanDusen, Physical Therapist and Craniosacral Therapist about craniosacral work.

A Different Take on Why Exercise and Bodywork are so Important
We know exercise and bodywork are good for many things; stress and pain relief, removing of toxins in the body, moving lymph, calming the nervous system, relaxing tight muscles, for a few. I could go on, it’s a long list. But, they are even more important from an anatomical point of view.
Remember that our bodies function as a unit. The liver does not function on it’s own. How it’s working effects everything else in the body. If you pull a muscle in your leg it has just as far-reaching effects. ‘The body is always at potential to change, and for new things to develop’, at all stages of our life. READ MORE»

CranioSacral Therapy: CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the connective tissue (fascia) and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord, and includes the brain, spinal cord, nerves, head bones and vertebrae, but effects everything in the body. The Raindrop Technique uses therapeutic grade essential oils applied in a sequence to the back, feet, and calves, and incorporates massage, Vita Flex, and reflexology to increase structural and electrical alignment. Gentle moist heat is applied to open the tissues and allow the beneficial properties to penetrate into the body. Since the molecules of these oils are very tiny and have a high energy frequency, they are able to penetrate the skin, be absorbed into the bloodstream and then be carried throughout the entire body very quickly. RainDrop Therapy is designed to bring balance to the body. READ MORE»
